ABOUT OUR FARM

Cake Flower Farm is a small, specialty cut flower farm located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, California. An area known for producing extraordinary wine grapes, with its warm days and cool nights, is also an ideal location for growing exceptional quality cut flowers.

Set on 2½ acres, our family-run, micro-farm includes a beautiful assortment of field-grown flowers, a handful of honeybee hives and some pretty adorable chickens.

THOUGHTFULLY GROWN FLOWERS

We use organic growing practices at Cake Flower. We are very passionate about the quality of our blooms, so our primary focus is on the health of the plants and the soil. Regular applications of organic compost, efficient irrigation, managing weeds by hand-cultivation and regular foliar feedings are just a few of the methods we use to encourage healthy growth.

It is extremely important to us that our sustainably grown flowers are not only safe for us to enjoy but are also pollinator-friendly, so this guides our daily farming practices.

UNIQUE, GORGEOUS BLOOMS

We specialize in growing elegant varieties of all our favorite, old-fashioned flowers. We’ve chosen specific varieties based on their fabulous fragrance, lovely coloring, and distinctive qualities.

garden roses | dahlias | hydrangeas | bearded iris | heirloom pumpkins | chrysanthemums | hellebores

LOCAL & SEASONAL

Our cut flowers are field-grown right on our farm in Santa Rosa, California. Our blooming season runs spring through early fall.

MEET JANET

Hi, I’m Janet. I’ve loved garden flowers for as long as I can remember and I’m especially drawn to those dreamy, romantic varieties — fragrant roses in muted tones…frilly peonies in gorgeous corals…fluffy hydrangeas in lime green & rosy pinks…and those wild, creamy blush dinnerplate dahlias. So, in 2019, I decided to take a chance — I transitioned from a job that I loved in the wine industry to start a small, specialty cut flower farm. I enrolled in Floret’s flower farming workshop (which was so awesome & inspiring!) and I started planting all my favorite flowers on the 2½ acres that my husband and I share with our chickens, honeybees, and a desert tortoise.

INSPIRATION FOR THE FARM NAME

I really enjoy baking, and I love cake, so the name Cake Flower Farm was inspired by two things that always make me happy — cake + flowers. I adore Violet Bakery’s cakes that are decorated so naturally with fresh flowers, and I hope to do something similar one day — to offer delicious, beautiful cakes decorated with flowers that I’ve grown.

ON DRIED FLOWERS

There is something about the process of drying dahlias that is so exciting to me. To take these gorgeous, vibrant, fresh blooms and allow them to reinvent themselves into something completely different and beautiful (and long lasting!) is a joy. I just can’t get over how much personality the dried versions have, whether it’s a twist in the petal or the way the colors soften as they dry, the end results are always stunning.

ABOUT OUR FLOWER STAND

During the blooming season, I open a little honor-system flower stand a couple of mornings each week.  We have a flower bar and sell fresh flowers by-the-stem, dried flowers by-the-bunch and heirloom pumpkins in the fall. One of the best parts of growing flowers, besides working outside with those fabulous blooms, are all the sweet notes that our customers leave for me at the stand!
